Welcome to Chris Maraffi’s Swango Blues! This site celebrates the modern “street” versions of the
partner dances Smooth Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango or Tango Nuevo, and Blues. It is meant to educate on their unique
qualities, explore their inherent relationships, and experiment with a creative new dance
fusion technique; Swango Blues. My version of fusion dancing is about 40%
Swing movements, 40% Tango movements, and 20% Blues movements to add some spicy
flavor to
the mix. Swing-Blues dancers find mixing Tango movements into their
dancing both fun and challenging. Argentine Tango dancers find adding Swing-Blues
movements into their dancing both fun and “Nuevo”. It can truly take
your dancing to the next level once you know how to seamlessly combine them! Fusion dance scenes
are currently popping up around the world, including in I have found that the common denominator that inherently
connects the modern styles of all three of these dances is the elastic and
improvisational connection between the dancers. My approach when combining these dances has been
to systematically modify the basic movements of each dance to enhance this
connection;
in order to produce seamless transitions where moments of fusion can occur. This opens
up a huge amount of creative combinations when partner dancing to a variety of
contemporary music that also has improvisation and elastic qualities in
the timing,
such as Swinging Jazz and Blues. We also frequently dance this fusion style
to modern Soul, Funk, and WCS & NeoTango style remixes. Lately we have even
been dancing Swango Blues to Indie and Goth music by The Cure, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Nine
Inch Nails, Muse, Vast, The Feint, etc. Actually, the new format for all my dances is called Underground Swing, which progresses
from classic Swing and Jazz… to Blues, Funk, and Soul… and finally to Indie,
Goth, and Club Remixes. People like this format because it provides a variety of musical
styles
for partner dancing throughout the night, and allows for both traditional
dancing and experimental fusion dancing like Swango Blues! |
